The quarter mile doesn't care about your Instagram followers. Here's the ranked hierarchy of modifications that actually move the needle on your ET — from tyres to turbos.
Your exhaust might sound incredible. Your paint might be flawless. Your interior might be show-quality. But at the strip, none of that matters. The timer only cares about one thing: how fast you crossed the finish line.
Here's the ranked hierarchy of mods that actually improve your ET, from essential to luxury.
These are the mods that move the needle. You must nail these first.
Time saved: 0.3–0.8 seconds
Drag-specific tyres are non-negotiable. Street tyres are useless at the strip. A set of proper drag radials or slicks transforms your launch. The first 60 feet determine your whole pass — get it right with good rubber.
Time saved: 0.2–0.5 seconds
Body roll kills ET. Upgraded suspension keeps the car planted, puts power down consistently, and prevents wheel spin. Stiffer springs, upgraded shocks, and anti-roll bars are essential.
Time saved: 0.2–0.4 seconds
An open diff is a death sentence for traction. An LSD locks the wheels together, ensuring both rear wheels pull equally. This alone can save 0.3s on launch.
Time saved: 0.1–0.3 seconds
A basic tune unlocks lost power and optimizes fuel delivery. Nothing extreme — just removing the factory limiter and tweaking ignition timing.
Once you've nailed the fundamentals, it's time to add horsepower.
Time saved: 1.0–2.0 seconds
This is the biggest single improvement you can make. Forced induction adds 100–200+ hp easily. The ET drops dramatically.
Time saved: 0.0–0.5 seconds (support mods)
You can't boost a stock engine indefinitely. Forged pistons, rods, and crankshaft let you push boost pressure hard without grenading the engine.
Time saved: 0.1–0.3 seconds
A high-flow fuel pump and injectors support the extra power. They don't directly improve ET, but they enable other mods.
Time saved: 0.05–0.2 seconds
A free-flowing exhaust reduces backpressure and improves scavenging. The gains are modest, but they're free performance.
Less weight = faster acceleration.
Time saved: 0.1–0.4 seconds
Remove the rear seats, door panels, carpets, and sound deadening. Every kilogram counts. A 100kg reduction can save 0.2s.
Time saved: 0.05–0.1 seconds
Swap the stock battery for a lightweight unit. Minor improvement, major cost savings.
Time saved: 0.05–0.2 seconds
Carbon bonnet, doors, or boot. Lighter than steel or aluminium, but expensive.
